Simple Cabinet Remodel How To

Old kitchen cabinets can make your kitchen look outdated and run down. There is a simple way, though, to give them a makeover and change the whole look of your kitchen. You can do a simple cabinet remodel that will not take a lot of time or cost you a lot of money. You may actually be surprised at how quick and easy it is to take your cabinets from drab to fab.

Gather Your Supplies

Before you get started on your cabinet remodel you will need to gather up the supplies that you need. You will need some gear to keep you and your kitchen covered. Get some rubber gloves, old clothes and drop cloths. You will also need sponges, a paint stripper, wood finish or paint and polyurethane. You may also need a sander or sandpaper, depending on the quality of your cabinets.

Getting Started

The first step after gathering your supplies is to set up your work area. You will need to remove the cabinet doors and layout your drop cloths. You want to remove all hardware from the cabinets. You may wish to remove all items from inside the cabinets as well.

You can now begin stripping off the old paint. You can do this with paint stripper or you can try sanding. It is up to you. You may need to sand cabinets if they are rough under all the coats of paint or finish that you remove. Make sure to wear gloves while working with the stripper or sanding. You should use the sponge dipped in the stripper to apply to the cabinets. Apply it evenly and let it sit for three hours. At that point you should be able to wipe off the paint. Then let the cabinets dry. Make sure you remove the paint from the doors and the cabinets since you will need to remodel the complete cabinet.

Doing the Cabinet Remodel

Now you can actually begin the transformation. You can either refinish the cabinets if you like the look of the wood or you can paint them. All you do is make sure the cabinets are clean and dry before starting. Then start painting on the varnish or the paint. Let them dry and then apply polyurethane to seal them.

Finishing Up

To complete the whole look you might want to buy new hardware. Just this simple and inexpensive purchase can make a huge difference. Put the hardware back on the doors and cabinets, hang the doors and you are done. It is that simple to do a cabinet remodel that can completely change the whole look of your kitchen. Even if you repaint the cabinets the same color, you will still notice the difference. A little cabinet remodel is something that you can do in a day or two without spending a lot of money, but you and everyone else will notice right away.
